Billabong is an Aborigine word for “watering hole” or “oasis”. Gordon and Rena Merchant came up with the name in 1973 in Burleigh Heads on Australia’s Gold Coast and decided to found their very own surf brand. Billabong has since become one of the biggest board sport brands in the world and the planet’s number 1 surfwear company. What started as a company selling handmade board shorts for a few friends turned into a brand that would alter the face of the surf scene forever. Their ever-expanding product offering includes stuff for surfing to skateboarding, snowboarding and streetwear. Element is actually owned by Billabong. Supporting the Best Action Sport Athletes in the World To promote their products’ quality, the brand has taken lots of wakeboarders, snowboarders and surfers under their wing, such as Joel Parkinson, Taj Burrow, Shane Dorian and Creed McTaggart. The three-time world champion Andy Irons, one of the best surfers on the planet who tragically died in 2010, surfed for Billabong.

Billabong takes part in many important surf contests such as the worldwide Pro Events and the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii. Billabong has a powerful influence on the scene and does more than just sponsor. The brand is also present at the Air & Style snowboarding contest in Innsbruck, Austria. The company’s support for board sports is a huge part of their image and has been a large part of their company ethos since day one.
