It all started when skateboarder Fred Gall and his mates sprayed the word “Metal” on their griptape one night and simply went out skating. The next day at Love Park, everyone was asking, “What's that?” – and more and more people became interested in the lettering. This developed into a small video project, which quickly turned into a kind of movement. In 1995, Chris Carter (DNA / Alien Workshop) surprised Fred and his friends by secretly putting Metal on Fred's Spider board – suddenly everyone wanted to know when the boards would be available to buy. This energy gave rise to Metal as a brand.
Metal is uncompromising, dark, raw – no advertising, no marketing, no rules. It's all about skateboarding, the street, the board and the right attitude. Metal is not a product, not a logo, not a trend – Metal is a way of life, an East Coast vibe that comes straight from the scene and ignores everything else.
