Completes, helmets and protection gear for beginners

We are often asked in our skate shops and on our website which skateboard is best to start skateboarding with. These questions are often based on age or height. And, of course, it is particularly interesting for beginners to get the right protective equipment in the form of pads and a helmet. After all, skateboarding is often associated with falls, scrapes and bruises. Here we want to show you how to get your first ollie on a skateboard safely and at a reasonable price.

Which skateboard is right for beginners?

First of all, you can be sure that all the skateboards and skateboard components you find on our site and in our shops are high-quality products that are above the standard of a run-of-the-mill department stores' skateboard. There are differences in our skateboards, just like in the car industry, for example. We therefore recommend that you don't start with a racing car, but with a compact small car - the complete board.

A complete board is the term for a completely pre-assembled skateboard that consists of a deck (board) with griptape, eight mounting screws, two skateboard trucks, eight ball bearings and four wheels. A complete board like this offers skateboard beginners the complete all-round carefree package.

Age plays an insignificant role in skateboarding. Whether you are 5 or 45 years old - skateboarding knows no age. It is more important to take your body and shoe size into account when making your purchase decision.

The difference is often small but significant. A normal skateboard, including the complete boards, have an average width of between 7.5‘ and 8.25’ paired with a length of 30‘ to 32’. A normal adult can cope well with these sizes. Over time, special preferences develop: some people like particularly wide decks, others like their tails a little more pointed. There are no limits to the details, but we recommend a solid middle ground to start with.

We recommend a complete kids' board for children under 1.30 metres. This makes it much easier to get around for the first time than with a ‘long’, normal skateboard. A kids‘ complete board has a width of 7.5’ or narrower and a length of up to 29’.

Protection gear and helmets for beginners

To make sure you don't look like you've just been beaten up after your first few attempts at skateboarding, you should think about getting pads and a helmet. A protector set consists of two knee, two elbow and two wrist protectors.

Before buying, try them on or use a tape measure. This is because there are considerable differences in size between children and adults. These are of course taken into account by the manufacturers and you can find your size in the corresponding size charts. The size charts can be found in the corresponding product descriptions. The same applies to skateboard helmets: once you have found your model, put on a tape measure and find the right size.

As a passionate skateboard company, we are of course delighted with every happy new skateboarder and hope that this article has brought you a little closer to your first skateboard.
